Genie Solar to Proceed with First Company-Owned Community Solar Project

Genie Solar Achieves Notice to Proceed with Construction of Its First Company-Owned, Community Solar Generation Project. 

Notice to proceed expected for a second project in early 2023

NEWARK, NJ – December 6, 2022:  Genie Energy Ltd., (NYSE: GNE, GNEPRA), a leading retail energy and renewable energy solutions provider, provided an update on two company-owned community solar projects totaling 10 megawatts of generation capacity.

Genie Energy’s Genie Solar subsidiary has obtained the notice to proceed (NTP) for its first company-owned project, a 4-megawatt community solar farm in Upstate New York.

“This is a major milestone for our vertically-integrated solar strategy, and we’re delighted to receive the NTP for our first company-owned community solar farm,” said Michael Stein, CEO of Genie Energy. “The environmental benefit and the economics driving the development of community solar are compelling for the customers and the generators, and we expect to expand from this initial project to additional sites in the coming months.”

Construction of the ground-mount project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2023.  Once construction is completed, the start of generation will be contingent upon testing of the interconnection and final approval from the regional utility.

Genie Solar has also completed a Coordinated Electric System Interconnection Review (CESIR) for a second company-owned community solar project in upstate New York and expects to achieve the NTP in early 2023. This 6-megawatt community solar project is also slated for construction in 2023.

Stein added, “Community solar plays to Genie’s strengths as an integrated solar provider. In our first two projects, we not only obtained control of the sites and are overseeing permitting, we are also financing and managing the construction of the projects.  We’ll utilize our own designed and manufactured solar panels and our retail arm will identify, enroll and manage the projects’ customers.

Kraft Power
A premier provider of water treatment in the New York and New Jersey area, Tower wanted to go solar to save money and generate clean energy. Upon reviewing the financial benefits available in New Jersey with the SREC program and the federal Investment Tax Credit, they wanted to safe harbor the project in 2019 and construct in 2020. Buying American Made panels was an important component of the project, and by utilizing their white roof, Genie Solar was able to leverage Prism Solar’s bifacial panels to minimize the square footage needed and maximize the electricity generated. Genie Solar helped them achieve all of their goals in an efficient manner with a 44.6 kW system.
Tower Water
Cardoza had both a showroom and a distribution center with exorbitant electricity costs in New Hampshire. As a legacy business, it was important to reduce costs and protect the business from increasing expenses prior to passing it on to the owner’s children. The show room’s roof and location made it a less than ideal location for solar; but the vast roof and direct sunlight on the distribution center could generate enough solar to power both facilities, plus the owner’s house. Leveraging New Hampshire’s group host program, Genie Solar built one 99.7 kW solar array to power all three locations. The owner is now considering converting more equipment to solar and building a second array.
